The Future Ain't What It Used to Be

In July, ICD Group welcomed members, agronomists, suppliers, and industry partners to the ICD Group Winter Conference at The Commodore Airport Hotel, Christchurch, with 87 attendees representing one of the strongest member turnouts in recent years.

The conference theme, "The Future Ain't What It Used to Be", is a quote commonly attributed to legendary American baseball player and manager Yogi Berra. While light-hearted on the surface, the theme reflected a serious and timely message.

The future many of us imagined even a few years ago is not necessarily the reality we find ourselves operating in today. Rapid technological change, evolving customer expectations, regulatory pressures, shifting market dynamics, and increasing uncertainty continue to reshape New Zealand agriculture. Success increasingly depends on being adaptable, informed, and open-minded to the opportunities and challenges emerging around us.

The theme also reflected ICD's own journey. As our industry evolves, so too must the way we collaborate, learn, and create value for members and recognised suppliers. This year's conference embraced that mindset through a refreshed programme designed to encourage broader thinking, technical learning, and meaningful discussion.

Insightful Speakers and Technical Learning

The two-day agenda brought together a diverse range of speakers covering topics relevant to both current business performance and the future direction of agriculture.

A highlight was keynote speaker Dr Dan Bloomer of LandWISE, who challenged attendees to think differently about the relationship between soil health and farm profitability. His presentation explored how improvements in soil function can deliver both economic and environmental benefits, reinforcing the importance of long-term thinking in modern farm systems.

Recognised suppliers also contributed a wide range of technical and strategic presentations, covering topics including:

  • UAV and aerial application technology, including evolving regulations and registration requirements
  • The growing world of biological products and biostimulants
  • Understanding HLB Scale for surfactants and emulsifiers
  • Insecticide resistance management and stewardship
  • Market insights, innovation pipelines and emerging technologies for the coming season

Together, these presentations provided members and agronomists with practical knowledge, fresh perspectives, and valuable insights to support decision-making ahead of the new season.

The Value of Collaboration

Beyond the formal presentations, one of the most valuable aspects of the Winter Conference continues to be the opportunity for interaction across the ICD network.

With business leaders, agronomists, supplier representatives and technical specialists gathered in one place, the conference provided a unique forum for exchanging ideas, discussing common challenges, and strengthening relationships across the Group.

The annual Conference Banquet Dinner, held on Thursday evening, was once again a highlight of the event. With almost all attendees present, the dinner provided an outstanding opportunity for networking and informal discussion, reinforcing the collaborative culture that has been central to ICD since its formation.

Looking Forward

The strength of attendance at this year's conference demonstrates the continued commitment of ICD members to investing in learning, professional development, and collaboration.

As our industry faces rapid change and increasing complexity, the ability to share knowledge, challenge thinking, and learn from one another has never been more important. Events such as the Winter Conference ensure ICD members remain connected, informed, and well-positioned to support New Zealand farmers and growers through both the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

ICD Group extends its thanks to all speakers, recognised suppliers, members, agronomists, and guests who contributed to making the 2026 Winter Conference such a successful event.

Local Strength. National Reach. Global Connection.
